EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal news:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
